The higher the your site is positioned, the more visitors are likely to visit it. The more visitors, the more sales, views etc.
One of the best free tools to can be found at http://www.tools4google.com which is quite easy to use and helps you keep track of your sites position and those of competitors. The tool is currently in beta and can only be used 5 times a day on any one computer.
Another tool you can use is SEOElite which while not free is fairly cheap and includes a lot of extra features such as a graphical representation of your websites placement over time. It also presents you with a lot of extra information and comes with proven website optimisation strategies. I have found the newsletters from the author to also be very valuable in boosting search engine position for my sites. SEOELite can be purchased with a one time payment and comes with frequent free updates.
