- You need patience. Don’t expect too much too soon. If you read and believe the hype you may be expecting the money to roll in two seconds after you put up your site (I did!) however unless you are the sole promoter of a product who’s demand skyrockets suddenly, this is not likely to happen. It takes time to optimise your site, time to learn how to refine your tactics, time to find the best products to promote etc.
- Promote products you understand and care about It is easier to promote products you a) are interested in and b) understand well. How do you write with passion about a product in which you have no interest? If you are interested in the product or service, you will accumulate background knowledge and insight to help you promote it better and find angles others miss, better understand its features, be able to answer questions on it etc.
- Focus on one campaign at a time. There are hundreds of schemes and promotions available on the Internet. The natural tendency is to try one marketing campaign and if one does not see results in a short while to jump to another campaign or purchase another “How-to” product. This will not work either in the short or long term. Affiliate marketing is an area where slow and steady wins the race. If you are trying to build up 10 different websites at the same time and trying to apply too many different traffic building tactics, you may end up dissipating your energy without accomplishing much. Choose a few products, one website and put all your effort into it. If you have chosen a good niche, apply the right content and are diligent in building content and attracting web traffic then you will succeed. - Do a lot of thinking. Try and put yourself in the shoes of potential visitors. Use free tools such as Google analytics to find out which search topics brought traffic to your website. Then expand on those areas on your site to cater to others who might be seeking the same information.
- Do something new on or about your website every day if possible. Don’t make the mistake of treating your online business as if it is not a business.
