Affiliate marketing is simply a revenue generating partnership between you as a website owner (the affiliate) and a provider of goods and services (the Merchant).

In affiliate marketing, you simply get interested visitors to take an action (such as clicking a merchants link or banner, filling a form or making a purchase) and get paid a fixed amount or percentage commission by the merchant depending on the partnership agreement.

Affiliates therefore serve as middlemen between client/visitor and merchant and get paid for linking up the visitor seeking a product and the product provider.

Affiliate marketing works because websites are usually designed to cater to a particular niche or topic and filled with content such as articles and other information relevant to that niche. The Internet is designed so that search engines filter and deliver visitors to your website that are already interested in and looking for the topics on your website.

So as an affiliate, if you can find a profitable niche, make your website as relevant as possible to that niche by providing genuine useful information, guidance and advice, optimise your site to attract the most visitors and then place relevant banners and links to your merchant on you website you should succeed e.g. you could place branded banners or links to a merchant selling LCD TV’s at a discounted or special rate on a website page which discusses the features of the best flat screen televisions or coming trends in TV media.

Affiliate marketing also works for merchants because they receive pre-qualified or pre-sold customers i.e. by the time visitors click on your banners, you should have already gently prepared and inclined them to make a purchase by the information you presented on your website.

Sometimes a 4th party may be involved - the affiliate network. Affiliate networks group and organise several (thousands) of product vendors together and greatly simplify the process of finding, registering and managing affiliates and payments or finding, comparing and registering with merchants.

Affiliate networks supply the technology to deliver the merchants marketing campaigns and offers. In addition they collect commission fees from merchants and pay successful affiliates.
